The Sun always smiles on Africa

Cast your mind back to that third week of August when the rain poured from the sky. Amidst that torrent, on 21st August, the Sun decided it wanted to see what was happening in Haggerston Park Hackney and blessed us with its presence in spectacular fashion. For the entire day people ate, drank, sang and danced in true African spirit in the baking sun rays.
Shoreditch Trust commissioned Hatch Events to produce the Shoreditch: Africa '05 festival as part of their two-week Shoreditch Festival that would bring pride to their African residents and create an opportunity for everyone to experience the wondrous variety of African culture.
Visitors were able to experience an explosion of African culture through live bands, food, market stalls, African dance and drumming workshops, games and African mask making that delighted and surprised them throughout the day.

A huge part of the event brief was to 'show-off' the local African community. African businesses were promoted through the "African Market", which offered everything from books and clothes to crafts and jewellery, and taste buds were satisfied by mouth watering, finger-licking dishes.
A stage was produced called "Hackney’s Finest" showcasing some of Hackney's best African bands, dance and drumming troupes, fashion designers and solo artists to fuel the celebrations.

Client quotes on Shoreditch: Africa '05

"It was a very real pleasure to work with Hatch Events. They are efficient, knowledgeable and charming. They seem to know everyone, and provided a fantastic line up on the limited funds we provided for artists and performance…The event itself was a huge success and attracted some 10,000 people over the afternoon…We would very much like to work with Hatch Events again."– Chris Westwood, Shoreditch Trust

"Thanks very much for programming a wonderful day to end the festival. It was a truly splendid day. There was so much going on and so many things to do and see" – Julie Flavell, Shoreditch Festival coordinator

We are pleased to announce that we will be staging the next Out of Africa festival on 27th, 28th and 29th May 2006.

This year's event was electrifying and inspiring and saw the host venue, Kingly Court and Carnaby Street, transformed into an Afro-wonderland by 200+ performers and 37 events. An estimated 30,000 people came to immerse themselves in the culture of a continent. For festival info and photos, click this link Out of Africa festival
